Santa takes a trip back in history and also flies into Springfield

You better watch out – Santa Claus is coming to town a few more times this weekend.

Santa – Springfield resident John Fleeger – will be bringing his passion for spreading Christmas spirit to multiple events this Saturday, Dec. 17, and Sunday, Dec. 18.

“I spent last weekend at the Bushnell Building Christmas celebration, which used to be Wren’s – the only place you’d go visit Santa when I was a kid,” Fleeger says. “And now, Santa will be at the Heritage Center this weekend.”

Families can visit with Santa at the Clark County Historical Society at the Heritage Center on Saturday, Dec. 17 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

For those who cherish memories of visiting Santa at the Upper Valley Mall, visiting Santa at The Heritage Center should bring back some nostalgic feelings. Santa will be greeting visitors in the chair from the Upper Valley Mall, and the Peanuts characters from the mall are also on display.

Fleeger says it’s sentimental to him to be able to fill Santa’s boots to visit kids in the same chair in which he visited Santa at the mall many years ago.

“I’m really excited to get to do this,” Fleeger says. “It’s like parts of my childhood and adulthood are coming together.”

Also at the Heritage Center, families can make a variety of ornament crafts, search to find the Scout Elf hiding in its location for this week, and enjoy the history of Clark County throughout the center.

On Sunday, Dec. 18, Santa will fly into the Springfield Beckley Municipal Airport. The event goes from 2 to 4 p.m., and Fleeger say it will include a fly over, landing, and visits with Santa and his elf.

Refreshments and coloring activities will also be available for families.
